Reader, This past week was truly our first full week back in a regular routine for Katie and me. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love traveling and trying new foods, but there is an inevitable overindulgence that happens when you are on the road. It feels incredibly good to be back on a normal eating and sleep schedule. With the baby on the way, our downtime has looked a lot different than usual. We went shopping for baby gear at a store called West Coast Kids. I will be honest: walking into that store as a first time dad is exactly like walking into a practical anatomy exam you didn't study for. I have never felt more lost, overwhelmed, and thoroughly confused by the sheer volume of contraptions required to keep a tiny human alive. We also hosted one of our final Airbnb guests. We are officially closing down that listing to transform the room into the nursery. Last night, we joined my brother's family for some trick-or-treating, soaking in the neighbourhood chaos, and today I am heading out for my actual last golf round of the season. That brings the grand total to 61 rounds ⛳️, just for the four of you on this newsletter who are still counting 🤣 To cap it all off, we are officially packing our bags and heading down to Scottsdale, Arizona🏜️ later this week. Katie and I are taking our parents, Olavo and Teresa, along with Lesley and Randy, for some much needed downtime in the desert. Being able to step away from the clinic and treat our family to a trip like this is exactly why I started the Financially Fulfilled Pro platform. After 15 years (in two weeks) as a physiotherapist and clinic owner, I realized that if you don't actively learn how money works, you will spend your entire career trading your physical time for clinical dollars. With all these life transitions happening, it is a great time to talk about your financial foundation. The Clinician's Order of OperationsWhen you start making clinical income, the biggest question is always: "Where do I put my money first?" There is a great baseline framework out there often referred to as an investment ladder or flowchart, like the Wealthsimple Investment Ladder Flow Chart. These guides are designed to help you become a "responsible money person" by laying out a step-by-step path for your cash. However, as a healthcare professional building lifestyle leverage, you need to adapt the standard cookie cutter advice to fit a higher-income, entrepreneurial trajectory. Here is how I view the clinician’s order of operations (with a nod to both my Canadian🇨🇦 and US🇺🇸 readers): 1. Eliminate the Wealth Destroyers (Bad Debt) Before you start picking stocks or buying real estate, you have to wipe out hig -interest consumer debt like credit cards carrying a balance. Earning 8% in the market while paying 20% in interest to Visa is a losing math equation. 2. Build Your Clinical Buffer (The Emergency Fund) You are your greatest income-producing asset. If you get injured, sick, or simply burn out, the clinical revenue stops. You need 3 to 6 months of living expenses sitting in a high-yield savings account or easily accessible liquid fund. This isn't an investment; it is your insurance policy against stress. 3. Take the Free Money (Employer Match) If you are an employee and your clinic or hospital offers an RRSP or 401(k) match, take it. It is an immediate 100% return on your money. However, if you are an independent contractor or clinic owner, this step doesn't apply to you ,you have to build your own engine. 4. The TFSA vs. RRSP (and Roth IRA vs. Traditional 401k) Debate Standard flowcharts will tell you to max out both of your registered accounts. But remember my philosophy: Don't blindly follow financial dogma.
5. The Wealth Engine (Taxable Accounts & Real Estate) Once your tax-advantaged buckets are optimized, your excess capital should flow into building your true wealth engine. This is where you acquire income-producing assets: taxable brokerage accounts filled with dividend-paying ETFs, investment real estate, or reinvesting into your own business to buy back your time. You don't need a complex strategy to build wealth; you just need to follow the ladder, stay consistent, and automate the process. @financiallyfulfilledpro and Certified Financial Counsellor CFC™ Do you get value from these weekly emails? |
I'm Robin, a practicing physiotherapist and Certified Financial Counsellor (CFC). For 14 years I've worked clinically while quietly building a multi-million-dollar estate through index funds, rental properties, and private lending. Every Sunday I send one email to 600+ healthcare pros: real numbers from my own portfolio, tax strategies that actually work, and the kind of advice your bank's commission-paid advisor will never give you.
Reader, This weekend, Katie and I completely scrapped our plans for a three day getaway to St. Clair, Michigan. Instead, we spent the last 72 hours going into overdrive on fall cleaning: washing windows, hauling out an old couch, deep cleaning the cars, and tackling a mountain of yard work (yuck). Katie also spent hours drawing up some new room designs for our contractor, Derek, to start tackling ASAP. The reason for the sudden change of plans and the urgent house prep? You’ll find out at the...
Reader, This week was a straight shot back to reality. Katie and I got home from Miami late Tuesday night and went immediately into clinical work mode on Wednesday morning. As I write this to you today, we are actually back on the road (thankfully not too far) filming a three day project for a TV show! Katie originally brought the casting call to my attention, and we ended up auditioning twice. To her absolute amazement, we got accepted. The dynamic between us during the application process...
Reader, Happy Sunday Monday, and to all my Canadian readers, Happy Thanksgiving! 🍂 My apologies, I had a technical issue and the newsletter didn't go out last night! This is actually the very first time Katie and I have been away from our parents for the Thanksgiving long weekend. Instead of the traditional turkey dinner at home, we are currently down in Miami (specifically Doral) using a 4-night, 5-day voucher we picked up through the Marriott Vacation Club. We are continuing our annual...
