Fijne zondag, Reader, Today, I'm excited to share the rest of the story! From Prague, we journeyed to Amsterdam 🇳🇱 for two incredible nights, soaking in the canals, the vibrant culture, and all the unique sights that the city has to offer. And then, it was time for the long haul home, flying business class with American Airlines, another testament to leveraging those hard-earned points! This entire trip has been a masterclass in balancing memorable experiences with mindful spending (cough* Katie cough*) Even when you score incredible deals on flights (like our Swiss Airlines business class for 70,000 Aeroplan points and $97 CAD taxes/fees per person!), the rest of the trip still requires intentional budgeting. So, for all you financially savvy travelers and aspiring adventurers, I'm sharing our entire European trip budget, from July 15th to July 23rd. This isn't about being cheap; it's about being strategic so you can enjoy these amazing experiences without financial stress when you get home. Here's the full breakdown, from our first steps in Zurich to our final moments in Amsterdam for both of us :)
Beyond the cash spent, the real magic of this trip was unlocked by strategic points accumulation. Let's break down the approximate cash value of what these point redemptions would have cost us if we paid cash:
Instead, we strategically used them on certain flights/classes to maximize our redemption value
That's a rough total estimated value of CAD $21 119.98 in travel value that we primarily redeemed using points! About 7.82 cents per point redemption grand total. This dramatically reduced our out-of-pocket expenses for the most expensive parts of the trip, allowing us to allocate our cash budget towards incredible experiences, food, and local exploration. This is the power of mastering the points game, it's a huge component of truly financially fulfilled travel. Okay, so you've seen how powerful travel points can be for those big bucket-list trips. But the smart use of credit cards and loyalty programs goes way beyond just flights and hotels. This is where you can squeeze extra value out of your everyday spending and build a hidden safety net for yourself. Many healthcare professionals simply use one or two cards without fully optimizing them. But understanding the different types of rewards can significantly impact your financial health:

Optimizing your credit card usage is a key part of the financially fulfilled life. It's about being smart with your everyday spending to unlock hidden value that fuels your experiences, saves you money, and provides a layer of security. This trip, with all its planning, spontaneity, and tracking, reinforced some core financial principles that apply whether you're traveling the world or just navigating your daily life:
This trip has been a powerful reminder that financial planning isn't just about accumulating wealth; it's about using that wealth (and those smart strategies!) to enhance your life, create lasting memories, and build a financially fulfilled future. Reader, Before we dive into the financial deep end today, I want to address the massive response to last week's poll. I asked if you wanted a deep dive on the ultimate financial debate: Paying off your mortgage vs. investing your cash. The overwhelming majority of you said YES. So, block off some time next Sunday, because we are going to break down the exact math on how to handle your mortgage based on a few personal factors. This week, though, I want to keep the focus strictly on investing....
Reader, I want to start today by wishing a massive Happy Mother’s Day to all the incredible moms reading this. Raising kids while balancing a career (especially in healthcare) is the hardest job on the planet. I especially want to take a moment to celebrate my own mom, Teresa. So much of the drive, work ethic, and foundational values that allowed me to build the life I have today came directly from her. She has always been an unwavering pillar of support for our family. If you are lucky...
Reader, Happy Sunday! If this newsletter feels a little shorter than usual, it is because I am writing this while still unpacking our bags. Today is Katie’s 33rd birthday; she's halfway to 66 (she'll hate me for saying that). To celebrate, I put together a surprise weekend trip. I even wrote her a custom riddle to reveal where we were going and who was coming with us: "We’re packing our bags, leaving the Hammer behind, With a compass set south, a new coastline to find. We’ll drive past the...
