Reader If you remember from last week, I decided to take on a home maintenance project that I had been putting off for far too long: resealing my driveway. Well, I officially finished the job this weekend. If you look at the video I posted, you'll see the concrete is looking crisp, but the real highlight is the aggressive watch tan line I earned in the process. π Taking this on myself saved me roughly $1,500 compared to the professional quotes I received. It was a great lesson in "sweat equity" trading my weekend time and physical labor to keep cash in my pocket. But as I was power washing and waiting for the sealer to dry, it got me thinking about the exact opposite concept: buying back your time. In home maintenance, trading your time for money occasionally makes sense. But in your clinical career, if you are always trading your physical time for dollars, you will inevitably hit a wall. In other related but unrelated news, the weather was touch-and-go yesterday, so we decided to spend Saturday afternoon doing some work at a rental property that is coming up for a renovation (tenants are vacating next week). After my driveway sealing project last weekend, I apparently got a touch for exterior work, so the goal this weekend was to repaint some of the front walkway; however, with the recent rain and a tornado warning, we decided against it. Earlier in the week, Katie agreed to help, but she drove a hard bargain. She sent me this text message: She fulfilled her promise of walking through the rental and providing her interior design insight, so I had to fulfill mine. We headed over to Dyment's Burger Bar for a burger and poutine (scroll down to see), and then hit up Summit Station Dairy for the milk. It was a great evening, but as I was eating, it got me thinking about the fundamental concept of compensation. Katie knew exactly what her time and labour were worth (in this case, dairy and gravy). But as healthcare professionals, we often trade our time and labor for a high income, assuming that a big paycheck automatically translates into true wealth. Spoiler alert: it doesn't. Since we are officially in mid-July and kicking off the second half of 2026, it is the perfect time to review exactly what you are trading your time for. The Mid-Year Financial AuditJuly is the perfect month to run a Mid-Year Financial Audit. We are halfway through the year, far enough in to see if your habits are working, but with enough time left to course-correct if they aren't. Here is the exact 3-step numerical review every clinician should run this week:
π‘ Thinking Outside the Clinic BoxAs part of my own mid-year review, I was reading an article from Visual Capitalist highlighting the highest-paid creators in 2026. The financial data is wild: the top 50 earners made a combined $1.02 billion between March 2025 and March 2026. MrBeast led the pack with an estimated $300 million. This list isn't just a handful of viral pranksters; it spans entertainers, educators, gamers, podcasters, and business creators, reflecting the growing diversity of the creator economy. The biggest takeaway? The most successful creators are building businesses that extend far beyond social media. Many are generating substantial revenue from consumer brands, subscriptions, live events, licensing, and other ventures alongside their online content. While most of us aren't aiming to make $300 million creating YouTube videos, the underlying principle is incredibly relevant to healthcare professionals. If you want to improve your livelihood and secure your future, you need to think outside the traditional clinical box. You have to take calculated bets on yourself to create revenue streams that aren't 100% tied to you standing at a treatment table. Whether it is launching a cash-based side practice, creating a digital product (like a home exercise program subscription), consulting, or aggressively investing in dividend-paying assets and real estate, building multiple streams of income is how you ultimately buy back your time. Exclusive Webinar: Master Your Money & Reduce BurnoutI am excited to announce that I am teaming up with the That Master Nurse Community for an exclusive live webinar happening on July 27, 2026. Remember the Fund Club I talked about joining in the spring of this year? In that community, I met Whitney Turcato, Founder of That Master Nurse, and together we are putting on a webinar for her audience. As healthcare professionals, we are all too familiar with the heavy toll of clinical burnout. In this session, we are going to dive deep into the exact strategies you need to take back control of your money, your time, and your career. What We Will Be Covering:

Hey there Reader, If you are reading this, I am currently packing my bags for what can only be described as a bucket-list week of golf. Starting on Tuesday, I am heading out to play a gauntlet of some of the most exclusive and historic courses on the East Coast: Tuesday: The Country Club at Brookline (One of the oldest country clubs in the US and host of the 2022 US Open). Howdy Reader! This weekβs edition is going to be a bit shorter and sweeter than usual because I am currently writing this from the couch, feeling quite ill. I woke up this morning with a full-blown cold. Seriously, who gets a cold in the middle of August? It feels completely backwards and I don't feel the best right now, but we are pushing through. Other than the bizarre summer sickness, it was a fairly standard week for us. We had three different Airbnb guests check in and out over the...
Reader Compared to last weekβs wild 72-hour grind, things were a little more subdued around here, though Mother Nature had her own plans for my long weekend. I played in the Club Championship tournament at our golf course this weekend. Unfortunately, todayβs round was completely rained out, pushing the final round to tomorrow. While a rainout isn't ideal when you're in tournament mode, it ended up being a blessing in disguise. It gave us the perfect window to pivot and focus on our rental...
