Reader, We are When most people plan a honeymoon, the default move is to drop $8,000 to $12,000 on a 14-day, 5-star all-inclusive resort in Mexico or the Caribbean. You park yourself on a beach chair, order mojitos, and don't move for two weeks. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. But Today, I am pulling back the curtain completely. I’m going to tell you the story of what we actually did, compare it to the cost of a standard luxury resort, show you our points strategy, and reveal the unfiltered, dollar-for-dollar budget of our 17-day Let’s dive in. The "Marathon Honeymoon" StoryWe didn't just visit one place; we structured the trip in three distinct phases to push our physical and mental limits and then aggressively recover. Phase 1: Santiago, Casablanca & Viña del Mar 🇨🇱 We landed in Santiago, rented a VW T-Cross, and drove straight into the Casablanca Valley. Instead of just sitting on a patio, we rented bikes and pedaled our way through a 3-winery tour. There is something incredible about using physical movement to earn a world-class glass of Sauvignon Blanc. We finished this leg with the coastal breeze of Viña del Mar and the urban-chic energy of Santiago's Lastarria and Barrio Italia neighborhoods.
Phase 2: Patagonia 🇨🇱 We flew deep south to the edge of the earth, setting up our basecamp at the Río Serrano Hotel & Spa. We traded our city shoes for heavy boots and tackled the Base Torres Trek, an 11-hour, 22km grind with over 1,000m of elevation gain. Navigating that final boulder field with glacial winds whipping our faces was a pure test of grit. But the reward? Melting into the Nativa Spa's heated pools and dry sauna that evening to manage the DOMS. Your body is your most important travel asset. Phase 3: Panama 🇵🇦 We pivoted from glacial ice to tropical humidity with a 15-hour travel transition to Panama City. We spent two nights at The Santa Maria (a Luxury Collection Hotel), where the hospitality team went above and beyond with rose petals, balloons, and an essential early check-in so we could recover in luxury before heading home.
The Comparison (Patagonia vs. The All-Inclusive)Let's talk math. A premium 14-day, 5-star all-inclusive in Mexico (flights included) for a honeymooning couple will easily run you between $8,500 and $11,000 CAD. For that price, you get one room, one beach, and the same buffet. For ~$9,300 CAD, we flew Business Class, navigated three different countries (a brief stop in Colombia), pedaled through Chilean vineyards, hiked the world's most famous glacial mountains, stayed in elite luxury suites at the W Hotel and The Santa Maria, and rented our own vehicles. We achieved an exponentially higher level of experience for the exact same price. How? By playing the points game and unbundling our costs. The Travel Stack & The "Patagonia Math"This trip was heavily subsidized by the points strategies we’ve been building over the last few years. To replicate this level of travel without paying the retail price tag, here is our exact stack: 1. The Flights (Business Class via Aeroplan) We flew Business Class (SCL → PTY → YYZ). Having lie-flat seats meant we arrived "Ready for Impact" rather than needing three days to recover from travel fatigue.
2. The Amex Platinum (The Golden Ticket)
3. Marriott Bonvoy Amex (The Luxury Upgrades)
The "Patagonia Math" ($1,200 Saved). Our luxury basecamp, Río Serrano, offered an "All-Inclusive" package. It is incredibly tempting to just let the hotel handle everything. Instead, we opted for the "Bed & Breakfast" rate. We spent $300 renting our own car and $992 booking private excursions. By unbundling our trip, **we saved ~$1,200 CAD** compared to the hotel’s package, keeping total autonomy over our schedule. The Transparent Honeymoon BudgetI promised I would show you exactly what this costs. No fluff, no hidden expenses. Here is the total breakdown for two people over 17 days of flights, luxury hotels, rental cars, and excursions.
(Note: We also utilized 130,000 Aeroplan Points and a $500 Air Canada Gift Card).

Reader, I want to start today by wishing a massive Happy Mother’s Day to all the incredible moms reading this. Raising kids while balancing a career (especially in healthcare) is the hardest job on the planet. I especially want to take a moment to celebrate my own mom, Teresa. So much of the drive, work ethic, and foundational values that allowed me to build the life I have today came directly from her. She has always been an unwavering pillar of support for our family. If you are lucky...
Reader, Happy Sunday! If this newsletter feels a little shorter than usual, it is because I am writing this while still unpacking our bags. Today is Katie’s 33rd birthday; she's halfway to 66 (she'll hate me for saying that). To celebrate, I put together a surprise weekend trip. I even wrote her a custom riddle to reveal where we were going and who was coming with us: "We’re packing our bags, leaving the Hammer behind, With a compass set south, a new coastline to find. We’ll drive past the...
Reader, Before we dive into the financial deep end today, I have a quick personal update: I officially turned a year older this week. 6 layer cookie cake To celebrate, Katie completely surprised me. She took me out for a lovely dinner and gifted me two very different things: a brand new set of shoes (because she says she wants me to be "cool" 😎) and a new portable microphone for my video content 🤓 It is a hilarious dynamic. On one hand, the wireless mic makes me feel young, like a trendy...
