Happy Sunday Reader , I hope you remembered to adjust your clocks for Daylight Saving Time, it’s always the most chaotic Sunday morning of the year! If you're anywhere near me in Southern Ontario, the city is still coming down from a serious case of collective heartbreak. The Blue Jays had two incredible shots at the World Series, and after all that hype, all that city-wide madness, the cheers, the despair, the patients all talking about the pitch count while I was trying to talk about pain scales, they lost. And honestly? I haven't regularly watched a baseball game since 2015, but even I was glued to the TV. Alas, the dream died. 💔 This feeling of watching hope swing so wildly to defeat is a perfect segue into the world of investing. It teaches us a crucial lesson about short-term focus and the danger of betting on a single star player, or in this case, a single star company. The key to long-term wealth isn't picking the next big winner and holding it for 40 years; it's betting on the entire game. The graphic below, which tracks the Top 10 S&P 500 companies by market capitalization over the last few decades, proves it. The Visual Lesson:
The chart demonstrates the extreme difficulty and risk, of individual stock picking for the long term. Why? Because the velocity of market disruption is accelerating. Today's powerhouse (like a social media giant) could be tomorrow's obsolete technology. The loss of the Blue Jays dream and the data from this chart should both serve as a potent wake-up call: your financial security must be built on broad diversification, not a single high-conviction bet (unless it's Bitcoin lol). Kidding aside. The end of the year is no time for heartbreak; it's a time for action. You only have two months left (November and December) to maximize your contributions for 2025. Don't let market volatility or holiday distractions make you miss these critical deadlines. Embrace Diversification (The Index Fund): Instead of trying to guess which of the 2025 giants will be on the 2035 list, invest in the entire index (like the S&P 500 or the TSX). This way, you automatically own every future winner and eliminate the need to constantly monitor which giant is falling. This is the most boring, most effective strategy available to busy professionals.
Maximize Your Tax-Advantaged Space: The most powerful action you can take right now is filling up your tax-advantaged accounts. This money grows tax-free or tax-deferred, supercharging your compound returns.
Just like companies, you need to stay relevant. The changing economy confirms that specializing in resilient sectors is key. Invest in your own expertise by pursuing that next certification or course. Your skills are an asset that the market desperately needs. If you want to see exactly how my personal, non-traditional portfolio is weathering the chaos (and why I still hold Bitcoin and Fine Art despite the volatility), you can find me on Blossom Social. I'm being transparent about this because I want to show you what long-term conviction looks like. My TFSA is currently up 29% year-to-date, and my RRSP is sitting close to 40%. But let me be clear: getting there was not a smooth ride! We've had major drops, and my conviction assets like Bitcoin have swung wildly. Blossom Social is where I share my actual portfolio. It’s a powerful community platform where you can connect with other investors, see real portfolios, and learn from diverse strategies. It cuts through the noise and provides genuine financial insights. Don't let the headlines dictate your future. Focus on the trend, not the daily score. Hey Reader, It’s official. The tenants are out, the keys are returned, and the reno has begun. Remember how I joked last week about Katie’s "HGTV expectations" vs. reality? Well, reality hit us in the face on Day 1. There is no glamor in peeling up 29-year-old linoleum peel and stick. Standing in that empty living room, covered in dust, I had a realization. I’m not just fixing floors; I’m fighting a battle against Declining Purchasing Power. Money today buys significantly less than it did...
Hey Reader, it is officially December! The tree is (probably) up, the clinic is getting chaotic with the "use-it-or-lose-it" benefit crowd, and we are sprinting toward the finish line of 2025. If you’ve been feeling like the economy is "bad" even though the data says it’s "fine," you aren't alone. Economists call this the Vibecession, where our feelings about money are worse than the reality. But according to the massive Wealthsimple "Big Ideas 2025" Report that just dropped, the bad vibes are...
Reader, did you survive the Black Friday madness? If your inbox looks anything like mine, it’s still recovering from the absolute barrage of "LAST CHANCE" emails. I hope you managed to navigate the noise, maybe used that Return on Time (ROT) filter we talked about, and didn't buy a toaster just because it has Wi-Fi. 😉 I ended up purchasing a doorbell camera and a floodlight/camera (for a rental property), more on that below. TD's Inside Investing Studio It’s been a whirlwind week on my end....
