💍 We Did It! Our Wedding Budget & Why Small is the Smartest Way to Start.

Happy Sunday, Reader,

Or, as I'm calling it today, Happy Officially Married Day!

As you know, Katie and I have been counting down to this weekend, and I'm thrilled to tell you: We got married yesterday!

I teased last week that this newsletter would be short, and it is. My commitment to consistency means showing up every Sunday, but my commitment to my new wife means I’m keeping this brief and focusing on the good stuff. (Plus, I need to get back to celebrating!)

This wedding journey has been an incredible learning experience, not just about love, but about intentional spending and financial alignment.

We chose to have a smaller, highly personalized wedding, and I can't commend Katie enough for her vision and financial discipline in making this happen. She completely understood that keeping the wedding small meant we could put those significant savings toward other life goals, like future investments, travel, or even paying down debt.

Our ceremony was intimate: 12 adults and 3 kids, held at a beautifully rented Airbnb that had 6 beds and 6 baths, allowing our immediate families to stay comfortably together. Here is the actual budget breakdown of our special day:

Expense Category Actual Cost (CAD)
Airbnb $2,114
Rentals (Chairs, Linens) $172
Alcohol $198
Flowers $186
Food (Catering/Groceries) $650
Officiant $450
Photographer $1,200
Wedding Dress/Suit $1836
Rings $1,926
Marriage License $134
Veil $100
Wedding Cake / Topper $100
TOTAL $9066

The Cost Per Person Reality Check

This is the number that really highlights the financial power of our choice:

Wedding Type Total Cost (Approx.) Total Guests Cost Per Person
Our Intimate Wedding $9066 15 $604.40
Traditional Ontario Wedding $55,000 100 $550.00

Here's the critical financial insight: While a traditional wedding has a slightly lower cost per person ($550) compared to ours ($604.40), the difference is negligible. The truly staggering figure is the Absolute Total Value we saved.

Our choice to keep the guest list small allowed us to keep **nearly $46,000** ($55,000 - $9,061) in our pockets. That saved money is already working hard for us in our investment accounts!

The Takeaway: Invest in What Lasts

The financial lesson is simple: Invest your resources into what brings you lasting value. Katie and I chose to prioritize the commitment, the intimacy, and our future financial security over a single, large, temporary party.

This choice allows us to celebrate our commitment now and still plan to host a larger reception for all our extended family and friends in the spring. More importantly, it meant we kept over $46,000 in our investment accounts, where that money is already working hard for our future.

This is a principle we can all apply to our lives: be intentional about where your money goes. Does that spending align with your long-term goals and your definition of a fulfilling life?

Until next week, I'll be back with a full newsletter. For now, I'm going to enjoy being married!

Hey Reader, It’s official. The tenants are out, the keys are returned, and the reno has begun. Remember how I joked last week about Katie’s "HGTV expectations" vs. reality? Well, reality hit us in the face on Day 1. There is no glamor in peeling up 29-year-old linoleum peel and stick. Standing in that empty living room, covered in dust, I had a realization. I’m not just fixing floors; I’m fighting a battle against Declining Purchasing Power. Money today buys significantly less than it did...

Hey Reader, it is officially December! The tree is (probably) up, the clinic is getting chaotic with the "use-it-or-lose-it" benefit crowd, and we are sprinting toward the finish line of 2025. If you’ve been feeling like the economy is "bad" even though the data says it’s "fine," you aren't alone. Economists call this the Vibecession, where our feelings about money are worse than the reality. But according to the massive Wealthsimple "Big Ideas 2025" Report that just dropped, the bad vibes are...

Reader, did you survive the Black Friday madness? If your inbox looks anything like mine, it’s still recovering from the absolute barrage of "LAST CHANCE" emails. I hope you managed to navigate the noise, maybe used that Return on Time (ROT) filter we talked about, and didn't buy a toaster just because it has Wi-Fi. 😉 I ended up purchasing a doorbell camera and a floodlight/camera (for a rental property), more on that below.
