πŸ“‰ Bitcoin Down, Whiskey Up? (My Q4 Portfolio Review) + 30 Hours Left: The "No Excuses" Sale

Happy New Year! πŸ₯‚ Reader

Welcome to 2026.

I hope your New Year's Eve was a bit more exciting than ours. If you were scrolling through Instagram, it looked like everyone was at a glitzy party or popping champagne on a beach.

Meanwhile, at the Valadares household, things were… different.

Both Katie and I were hit with a nasty bug 🀧 to start the year.

We didn't even make it to the ball drop; we were lights out by 10:00 PM. The first few days of 2026 have been a blur of tissues, blankets, and averaging maybe 3,000 steps a day because it was too cold (and we were too weak) to leave the house.

However, there was one silver lining: we I finally watched the Stranger Things finale. (No spoilers, but it was quite good). Katie doesn't like 'make em ups', so she opted to paint instead.

But whether you started the year partying or hibernating, the reality is we are all back to the grind now. And if you’re like most people, "Get Financially Secure" is sitting at the top of your resolution list.

In the spirit of total transparency (and keeping myself accountable), I want to start the year by opening my books. Here is exactly how my personal portfolio performed to close out 2025.

I believe you shouldn't take advice from someone who doesn't show their work. Here is the breakdown of my asset performance for the final quarter of 2025.

The Winners ( βœ…):

  • Fine Art:+22.79% (The unexpected MVP of the quarter!)
  • Fine Whiskey:+27.14% (While Wine was down, Whiskey carried the team).
  • RRSP (401k equivalent): +16.84% (Solid market growth).
  • Non-Registered Funds:+14.54%
  • TFSA (Roth IRA equivalent):+11.22%

The Losers (❌):

  • Stock Options:-6.64% (High risk, and this quarter, it bit back).
  • Bitcoin:-6.60% (Volatility is the price of admission here).
  • Fine Wine:-6.66%

The "Flatline" (βž–):

  • Real Estate:0%

Diversification saved me. If I had been 100% in Crypto or Stock Options, this would be a red report. Instead, boring old Registered Accounts and alternative assets (Art/Whiskey) pushed the overall portfolio into the green.

Speaking of that 0% Real Estate return... we are working hard to change that.

Rental Property Status:

  • Drywall: Done.
  • Priming: COMPLETE. The whole house has been primed white. It finally looks like a home again and not a construction zone.
  • Next Up: Painting starts this week, followed immediately by the new flooring.

The Tenant Hunt: I posted a "Renovation Transition" video on Facebook to show the progress, and the response has been huge. We have already started accepting applications (through a Google Form)

  • We are letting the applications pile up for now and will begin the deep-dive vetting process in the next couple of weeks.
  • Our Goal: A signed lease by Feb 1st

🧰 The 2026 Ultimate Toolkit: Start With a Bang

You can't build a house without a hammer, and you can't build wealth without the right tools. If you want to optimize your life this year, these are the exact apps/platforms I use daily.

πŸ’° For Your Money:

  • Lunch Money – The absolute best budgeting app for people who want control. It handles multi-currency, crypto, and manual tracking perfectly. (Use my link for a free month trial).
  • Wealthsimple – The easiest platform to open your TFSA/RRSP and automate your investing. Get $25 just by opening an account
  • Blossom Social – Stop guessing. See what other successful Canadian investors are buying (Stocks, ETFs, Bonds) and get educated in a fun way. (Use my link to join the community).

πŸ₯ For Your Business (Practice Owners):

  • Hubdoc – Throw away your shoebox of receipts. Snap a photo, and it auto-extracts the data. It’s magic for data aggregation.
  • Xero – The accounting software that talks to Hubdoc. This combo will save you dozens of hours (and accounting fees) this tax season.

✈️ For Your Lifestyle:

  • Roame.travel – Want to travel more in 2026? This is the ultimate tool for "Flight Hacking" and finding the best award redemptions.
  • MileIQ – Stop manually logging your mileage log. This app runs in the background and tracks every drive for your tax deductions.

✈️ For Your Health:

  • Athletic Greens– If you are tired of having a counter full of pill bottles. It is an all-in-one foundational nutrition drink that replaces your multivitamin, probiotics, and greens powder in a single scoop. It is NSF Certified for Sport, meaning it's rigorously tested for quality and free of banned substances, a standard we should demand. It’s "nutritional insurance" that takes 30 seconds.
  • Cronometer– Most tracking apps are just glorified calorie counters. Cronometer is a true nutrition tracker. You can’t improve what you don’t measure. Whether you are tracking for longevity, performance, or metabolic health, this app gives you the granular data you actually care about, and it syncs seamlessly with your Oura Ring, Apple Health, or Garmin.

Reader. I am officially back in Hamilton after an incredible weekend in Mexico. Swapping the beach for the February cold is always a harsh reality check, but we have a lot of ground to cover today. Reader. It was a massive family affair last night in Toronto. We got the whole crew together: Katie's parents (Lesley and Randy), her brother Mike and his family (Ca and baby Orion). We were hosted by Julie's (Katie's other brother Matt's wife) parents Nelly and Dale. I ended up chatting with Dale for a solid hour (as one does after a few glasses of wine) about everything from politics to the economy. But one topic kept coming up: "Is the money actually going to be there when I need it?" Dale...
